10th February 2017: RSM Partners is doing its part in helping to ease the mainframe skills shortage by hiring and educating trainees under its own scheme called the 'Mainframer in Training (MIT) Programme'.
As a provider of IBM Z mainframe skills and services globally, RSM understands the difficulties the industry now faces finding mainframe people. RSM sees growing its own talent as a big part of its future strategy and a way of tackling the industry's growing lack of mainframe specialists and expertise.
The impending retirement of a large number of the mainframe workforce continues to be a major concern for CIOs and CISOs of large corporations and government departments worldwide.
'The IT industry knows there is a growing lack of mainframe expertise, but is struggling to find a solution,' says Mark Wilson, RSM Partners Technical Director. 'Our MIT Programme is a great way to bridge the skills gap. It's the ideal route for people new to the mainframe world to gain a real qualification, build a career and earn money, while they learn on the job alongside RSM colleagues who have many years' experience. Hiring trainees has enabled us to grow our own talent. We're developing motivated, skilled and qualified mainframe specialists.
Martin Knight is just one of RSM Partners employees who has signed up to the recruitment training scheme. Martin joined RSM in June 2016, having previously spent 2 years in desktop support. He quickly realised that the mainframe environment is vastly different, requiring a more advanced set of skills. However, it immediately became apparent that he could adapt and is now improving his platform knowledge every day. Through a mixture of classroom style tutoring, on the job experience and guidance from more senior technicians, he is already becoming a valuable addition to the mainframe managed services support team.
'I was apprehensive at first about entering the world of the mainframe and z/OS, but I couldn't miss out on such an exciting opportunity. With the excellent support and guidance I've received from my colleagues and directors, I've settled in well. I'll continue expanding my knowledge and expertise in the overall mainframe environment, but aim to specialise in a specific mainframe technical area in future. The 100% support from RSM has been great,' Martin said.
